Temporomandibular disorder is a term that encompasses a vast array of disorders of the temporomandibular joints and associated anatomical structures. Everyone has two TMJs, one on each side of the face located just in front of the ears. These structures can be responsible for intense, severe pain and suffering.
Bruxism is the medical term for unconscious teeth clenching and grinding relating to your temporomandibular joint. This condition is often caused by physical or psychological stress or a sleep disorder which, if untreated can result in loss of tooth enamel, increased tooth sensitivity, chipping of teeth and could cause permanent damage to teeth and jaw joints. People suffering with Bruxism can wake up with headaches, earaches, facial pain and migraines which may lead to the appearance of a severe square jaw.
Treatments using muscle relaxants weaken the muscle enough to reduce the effects of grinding and clenching, but not so much as to prevent proper use of the jaw muscle for eating.
At Skinworx an initial complimentary consultation is your first step for any cosmetic procedure. An experienced and well trained Doctor will go through your concerns, treatment protocol and assess the area/s that is to be treated.
By injecting small doses of muscle relaxant directly into the masseter muscle (the large muscle that moves the jaw) the muscle is then weakened enough to stop involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. Damage of the TMJ and headaches should be reduced and/or eliminated as well. A definite softening of the jaw line will also be noticed not long after the treatment has been administered.
